TEACHER PROFILES:
SUSAN WERNER has 6 albums
under her belt, a touring career throughout the U.S. and a string
of accolades from the likes of The Washington Post, Village
Voice and The New Yorker. She has become one of the
defining artists of the contemporary performing songwriter scene
with songs that effortlessly slide between folk, jazz and pop,
delivered with wit and charm. As a Chicago
Tribune writer noted: "Susan
Werner is a triply blessed artist who sings adroitly, plays the
piano smartly and, best of all, writes songs of genuine distinction
and high craft..." Werner has wowed audiences at past Mountain
Stage and NewSong appearances; now see how she does it with up-close
instruction. www.susanwerner.com
CRAIG
BICKHARDT’s songwriting credits read like a Who's
Who of the music industry. He has written and co-written a broad
range of great songs covered by artists such as Ray Charles,
The Judds, Kathy Mattea, B.B. King, Art Garfunkel, Martina McBride
and many others. The Judds "Heartland" album featured
three songs Craig had a hand in, including the number one Billboard
hits "Turn It Loose" and "I Know Where I'm Going".
His songcraft is also featured in the number one hits "In
Between Dances" (Pam Tillis), co-written with Barry Alfonso,
and "It Must Be Love" (Ty Herndon), co-written with
Jack Sundrud. He also landed platinum album cuts with "Where
I Used to Have a Heart" (Martina McBride), "All the
Things We've Never Done" (McBride), co-written with Jeff
Pennig, and "Even a Cowboy Can Dream" (Trisha Yearwood),
also co-written with long-time collaborator Barry Alfonso. You
can also find his work on the soundtracks of the movies “Tender
Mercies” and “Switchback.” He is an accomplished
performer, matching a soulful voice with a killer acoustic guitar.www.craigbickhardt.com
DEVON
SPROULE is a longtime friend and favorite of ours here
at NewSong, and we're delighted that she'll be joining us at
this year's NewSong Academy. Based in Charlottesville, VA, Devon
Sproule's recent 'Keep Your Silver Shined' CD is a masterpiece
collection of songs. Her previous CD, "Upstate Songs" was
included in Rolling Stone's Critics Top Picks of 2003.
In 2005 she was a favorite on NewSong's main stage and her lyrical
and lovely music was featured on that year's festival-closing
Mountain Stage NewSong show.
